Truths about volunteering #1
Three-quarters of Americans do not volunteer. One-quarter do. Turns out some who don't, actually do. It comes down to a definition of what volunteering is and some association members serve their association but don't call it volunteering.* Maybe its not about volunteering, its about being a citizen.
*Reported in the ASAE & The Center Decision To Volunteer survey.

Great point. I've been wanting to write about this for a while at: http://www.theextraordinaries.org/ -
One of the main issues here may be simply about nomenclature. We've got a dynamic and enormous open source community - "software volunteers" if you like - but they're never considered to be volunteers. If we swapped our names around, we might consider that a lot more people are volunteering - and then also have the words to talk more widely about the intertwined nature of volunteerism and citizenship.
I heartedly agree - its in the words. And that'll become even more of a barrier - or opportunity if get them right - to the next generation's engagement. Thanks!
