As we wrap up a year and move into the new year, there are questions flying over on ASAE Collaborate. Like the recent exchange on Components all around chapter structure and support. We understand how benchmarking is a useful tool ... so here's a handy infographic on chapters and link to the full benchmarking study.

Naughty school boy erasing I'll try harder on a blackboard

We do a lot work in the area of strengthening components aka chapters. So many times, we are asked to “help them do their job better”. We’ve tried – and in several cases succeeded – in helping associations shift that request to “help them create the job they can do”.  Or in other words, evolve the way chapters operate. This is a tough shift – we know. And it’s an age-old challenge as Jamie Notter recounted in his latest blog post where he offered a story about competitive swimming in the early 1800’s.

What chapter doesn’t need more volunteer muscle? While associations in general are feeling the pressure in engaging volunteers, chapters’ pain is more acute. We could go into depth why chapters are struggling however simply put it’s a time/flexibility issue. One counterpunch is to make volunteering fun and appreciated.

light bulbs with one lit - new ideas

Associations are tweaking, evolving and revamping their chapter programs. According the ASAE Foundation Mutually Beneficial Volunteering Relationships, 44% or associations in the study indicated they reviewed their structure and 41% added or deleted components or made a change within the past five years. Examples of this will be part of the conversation at CEX: Association Component Exchange on October 13 in Arlington, VA.

Yes-No-Maybe

Most of us know how much our chapters cost (staff support, rebates/grants, training programs, tech platforms, etc.), but few seem to have a good handle on the actual return on that investment. To help us develop a rational model by which associations might assess the financial value generated by chapters, we’ve launched the Chapter ROI Project and we’re inviting association execs to contribute to a Chapter ROI Valuation Matrix.
