Tip #6: New Year’s Resolution Check! Recharge
or Re-aim!
Remember the New Year’s Resolutions you set? Well it’s time
to check in and see how you are progressing while there’s still
time to do something about them. It’s not time to punish yourself
for those you haven’t made progress on, but to evaluate, adjust
and regroup while you have time to make a difference.
Look at summertime as a starting over place. For many associations, like
educators, fall ushers in a new year and summer is for looking ahead,
getting things in order and making plans.
4 Simple Steps to Take
We scanned the web and checked in with a number of personal/career
coaches for advice on this mid-year resolution check. Here’s the
best of their advice.
Step 1: Pull out the list and put them in four categories: Accomplished!;
Actively Working On; No Action/Still Motivated; No Action/Low Motivation).
The idea here is to first evaluate the goal – it is still relevant
and important to you? If you haven’t done anything towards accomplishing
that resolution, then ask yourself why it is on your list.
Step 2: Toss out the ones no longer relevant or that just don’t
fit. Celebrate the ones you’ve accomplished.
Step 3: Evaluate your progress on the remaining list using the checklist
below.
Step 4: Evaluate your follow-through and accountability. This is tough,
but you need to give yourself a performance appraisal. Focus on where
you tended to lose steam or get energized.
Step 5: Write a plan of action for each that will get you to the goal
line by December 31st. Commit to specifics, put in place checkpoints
and supports (like your best friend or faithful colleague) and tap those
areas which you noted in Step 4 that tended to energize you.

Resolution Check-Up:
Ask the following questions about each of your resolutions. When you’ve
completed the check-up you should have the information you need to re-charge
or re-aim your resolution.
- Start with the biggie: what progress have you made?
- If you didn’t even start … what kept you from starting?
- How does that measure up to what you set out to do?
- If you set a plan in January to accomplish this goal, did you follow
it?
- Which parts worked for you? Didn’t work for you?
- Are there any actions you planned to take but didn’t?
- Did you have the resources (time, money, support) necessary
to carry out the plan?
- If you didn’t have a plan to accomplish this goal, what actions
have you taken in the past 6 months related to this goal?
- Which of these worked for you? Didn’t work for you?
- What resources have you applied to this goal?
- How attentive were you to this goal?
- What focused you on the goal?
- What distracted you from the goal?
- What resources (time, money, support) can you realistically apply
to this resolution in the remaining months?
- Given what you know about this resolution, what can you realistically
accomplish in the remaining months?
- How important is this resolution to you?
